HKK-APF Active Power Filter Configuration: Key Steps and Key Points

The HKK-APF series active power filter from Shanghai Huakun Electric is a modular power-quality conditioning device built on a high-speed DSP processing chip and a three-level (neutral-point-clamped) topology. It simultaneously delivers harmonic suppression, reactive power compensation, and three-phase unbalance regulation, supports both rack-mount and wall-mount installation forms, and its modules can be connected in parallel for unlimited expansion. APF configuration spans the full workflow from preliminary survey and product sizing, hardware wiring, parameter setting, on-site commissioning, to ongoing maintenance. The key configuration steps and points are described below for reference by engineering design and on-site commissioning personnel.

1. On-Site Survey and Product Sizing

Sizing is the foundation of APF configuration; improper sizing directly results in insufficient compensation or wasted capacity.

1.1 Collecting On-Site Power Quality Baseline Data

Use a power quality analyzer on site to collect distribution system data, including system voltage level (380V/480V, etc.), grid frequency, load type, harmonic orders, total current harmonic distortion (THDi), reactive power demand, three-phase unbalance, and neutral current. Also confirm whether the system is three-phase three-wire or three-phase four-wire, and identify the distribution of harmonic sources.

Key point: Collect data under peak load conditions, not just light-load data. If on-site measurement is not feasible, estimate the capacity based on transformer rating, load factor, and the proportion of non-linear loads, reserving a 10–20% expansion margin.

1.2 Determining Compensation Capacity and Module Specifications

Select the module capacity (25A/35A/50A/100A/150A) based on the total compensation current after summing harmonic current, reactive power compensation, and three-phase unbalance; multiple modules can be connected in parallel. Also choose the installation form: wall-mount suits confined spaces, while rack-mount suits centralized installation in standard cabinets.

Key point: Reactive power and unbalance compensation consume APF output current; the capacity must be sized by summing all requirements, not by harmonic current alone.

1.3 Confirming External Accessory Specifications

Match the current transformer (CT) ratio — the HKK-APF supports CT ratios from 150/5 to 10000/5. Determine the CT mounting position, supporting either source-side or load-side connection. Confirm communication requirements (RS485, Ethernet) and plan the background monitoring solution.

2. Hardware Installation and Wiring Configuration

2.1 Confirming the Installation Environment

Ambient temperature: −10°C to 40°C; altitude ≤1500m. Above 1500m, derate the rating according to national standards. Avoid corrosive gases, conductive dust, humidity, rain, and flammable or explosive environments.

Reserve ventilation and maintenance space in front of and behind the device, and do not block air inlets or outlets to ensure fan cooling. The mounting wall for wall-mount units must have sufficient load-bearing capacity.

2.2 Key Wiring Points

1. Main power circuit: select cables for three-phase three-wire/four-wire systems matching the module rated current, with cable ampacity meeting the device maximum output. The N conductor must be reliably connected (three-phase four-wire systems), and the PE protective earth must be reliably grounded to prevent leakage-current safety risks.

2. CT wiring: never leave the CT secondary circuit open; verify CT polarity and phase sequence, as reversed polarity will cause compensation failure or even magnify harmonics.

3. Secondary communication wiring: use shielded twisted-pair cable for RS485 with proper shield grounding; the network port is used for PC-based monitoring and commissioning.

4. Configure a matching circuit breaker at the input front end, with the breaker current matched to the APF module capacity.

Safety key point: Before wiring and commissioning, always disconnect all input power. The DC bus capacitor discharge time exceeds 5 minutes — confirm full discharge before operation to prevent high-voltage electric shock.

3. Device Parameter Configuration

The HKK-APF supports parameter setting via the built-in LCD touch screen or PC host software. Key configuration items are as follows:

3.1 System Basic Parameters

Set the grid wiring mode (three-phase three-wire / three-phase four-wire), system voltage, grid frequency, CT ratio, and CT mounting position (source side / load side). For multi-module parallel projects, set the parallel address to ensure coordinated operation of all modules.

3.2 Compensation Function Mode Configuration

1. Harmonic compensation: Set the harmonic compensation range of 2–50 orders, with specific harmonic orders selectable for compensation; set the compensation target, e.g. target THDi below 5%.

2. Reactive power compensation: Enable or disable reactive power compensation and set the target power factor (continuously adjustable from −1 to 1).

3. Three-phase unbalance compensation: Enable the unbalance conditioning function as needed.

Key point: Enabling multiple functions simultaneously consumes module output current; prioritize functions based on the capacity on site to avoid exceeding the module rated output.

3.3 Protection and Alarm Parameters

Configure alarm thresholds for overvoltage, undervoltage, over-temperature, over-compensation, and CT open-circuit; set fault record storage, alarm output contact parameters, and fan temperature-control on/off thresholds.

3.4 Communication Parameter Configuration

Configure Modbus and TCP/IP communication addresses and baud rate to interface with the background monitoring system, enabling remote reading of power-quality data and remote parameter modification.

4. On-Site Commissioning

1. Pre-energization checks: Verify main circuit wiring, CT wiring polarity, grounding, and phase sequence, and confirm there is no short circuit; check the integrity of the communication wiring.

2. No-load energization test: With the APF compensation output disconnected, energize and observe the display, fans, and indicator lights, and check whether the device reports any alarm. Verify that the sampled voltage and current readings match the actual on-site conditions, and verify the CT open-circuit alarm function.

3. Load-on compensation: Enable compensation functions gradually and observe the post-conditioning THDi, power factor, and three-phase current balance. Compare power-quality data before and after conditioning to confirm that the design target is achieved, and monitor the module operating temperature and noise.

Key point: When the grid voltage distortion exceeds 15%, evaluate the special condition and adjust the conditioning scheme if necessary.

5. Ongoing Maintenance and Continuous Monitoring

1. Periodically review device operation logs and fault alarm records; the HKK-APF stores up to 500 fault alarm records for issue tracing.

2. Periodically clean the cooling duct filters to prevent dust accumulation that causes poor heat dissipation and device derating protection.

3. After a major load retrofit or expansion, re-measure the on-site harmonic data, recheck the APF capacity, and add parallel modules if necessary.

4. Periodically review harmonic, reactive power, and temperature data via host software to predict potential faults in advance.

6. Summary of Common Configuration Precautions

1. CT polarity and phase sequence are frequent commissioning failure points; reversed connection causes compensation failure. Never open the CT secondary circuit.

2. Simultaneously enabling the harmonic, reactive power, and unbalance functions consumes module rated current; consider this comprehensively during sizing and parameter configuration.

3. Ambient temperature and altitude affect the APF output capacity; derate the power for high-altitude installations.

4. The APF must be reliably grounded; wiring and maintenance must be performed by certified electrical engineers, and full capacitor discharge must be confirmed before opening the cover after power-off.

The HKK-APF series from Shanghai Huakun Electric supports unlimited parallel expansion of modules, with a full response time of less than 5ms and a filtering range of 2–50 orders. It provides dual parameter-setting modes via the local touch screen and remote PC software, and is widely used in harmonic conditioning scenarios such as industrial manufacturing, data centers, hospitals, commercial buildings, and photovoltaic supporting systems.
